Summary

9 hours, 20 minutes

The scorching new thriller from the number-one 'New York Times' best-selling author of 'The Girl on the Train'

When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him。 Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim’s home。 Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member。 And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police。 Three women with separate connections to the victim。 Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment。 Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them。 When it comes to revenge, even good people might be capable of terrible deeds。 How far might any one of them go to find peace? How long can secrets smolder before they explode into flame?

I think this could have been a 5 star book for me if it had hit me at the right time when I wasn't so burnt out。 I enjoyed the storyline。 I especially liked that the author seemed to poke fun at herself a bit。 It just had too much skipping around and too much brain power required and was too much of a slow burn to grab my attention and keep me engaged。 I think this could have been a 5 star book for me if it had hit me at the right time when I wasn't so burnt out。 I enjoyed the storyline。 I especially liked that the author seemed to poke fun at herself a bit。 It just had too much skipping around and too much brain power required and was too much of a slow burn to grab my attention and keep me engaged。 。。。more

This book was okay but a bit disappointing versus others I have read by this author。 It kicks off with the discovery of a body on a houseboat in London。 It’s clearly a case of murder, so for the police it’s now simply a case of identifying who had both the opportunity and the motive。 There is a cast of characters that you are introduced to and then you spend time trying to figure where they land in the storyline。 We have the nosy neighbor who had found the body, a young woman who’d had a recent This book was okay but a bit disappointing versus others I have read by this author。 It kicks off with the discovery of a body on a houseboat in London。 It’s clearly a case of murder, so for the police it’s now simply a case of identifying who had both the opportunity and the motive。 There is a cast of characters that you are introduced to and then you spend time trying to figure where they land in the storyline。 We have the nosy neighbor who had found the body, a young woman who’d had a recent one night stand on the victim's boat and an aunt who seems to be nursing a whole bag of resentment, for reasons we are to discover later。 And there are other linked characters too who are perhaps worthy of consideration。 Could one of these be the killer or are we being sold a shoal of red herrings? Well, it’s a complicated tale and readers will need to pay close attention if they’re to have a chance of successfully resolving this one。 There are a number of separate storylines running in parallel as we step back and forth in time。 I found it a little confusing, in truth, though I confess I am easily lost if too much information is put on the table。 The story is told from their alternating POVs, but it had an easy flow to it that kept it from being confusing and disjointed。 Hawkins did a masterful job at ultimately weaving the three stories together and bringing it all full circle, which makes it a compelling read that keeps you thinking about the characters long after the somewhat surprising reveal。 The pace of this book was quite slow as compared to her other novels I felt。 The cast of characters are definitely unforgiving, unrelated and unreliable at the same time。 I also did not like some of them at various points in the story。 。。。more

Very good book and kept my interest all the way through。 I listened to this being read by Rosamund Pike and she was absolutely fabulous! One of the best narrators I have come across。

Unfortunately, I was so disappointed in this book。 :( It felt done before, in many ways。 I knew who the killer was from the beginning or at least 95% sure the whole time。 Throughout the book, I was convincing myself it was other characters because I didn’t imagine it to be so obvious。 I wish the jumping back and forth between the time line and characters stories were transitioned better。 It felt like reading 4 different stories at once to get abruptly changed to another story。 Eventually it all Unfortunately, I was so disappointed in this book。 :( It felt done before, in many ways。 I knew who the killer was from the beginning or at least 95% sure the whole time。 Throughout the book, I was convincing myself it was other characters because I didn’t imagine it to be so obvious。 I wish the jumping back and forth between the time line and characters stories were transitioned better。 It felt like reading 4 different stories at once to get abruptly changed to another story。 Eventually it all tied together but I have seen this writing technique done before and it confused me a bit in this book。 All in all, it was an okay book。 Not the best not the worst。 Wouldn’t recommend to a seasoned mystery/thriller reader but if you’re just starting to get into reading or reading mystery/thriller books this may be for you。 (I find myself proficient enough in thrillers - somewhere in the middle of novice and expert that I feel like I can say that lol) On a positive note, I loved the characters themselves and their stories/backgrounds。 I think that’s a big part of what made me like the book。 。。。more

Great story and loved that the audiobook was narrated by Rosamund Pike。 Paula Hawkins has a unique ability to dump a bunch of character development into the first half of the book and then masterfully weaves it together throughout the back-half, leaving you guessing, thinking you figured it out and then proven wrong, until at long last, the true culprit is revealed。 Such a great read。

Entertaining crime thriller but somewhat required suspense of disbelief。 Enjoyed Laura’s character—depiction of frontal lobe TBI long term effects。

Interesting characters that are not always like able but sympathetic。 It was a good story but the ending went off the rails for a bit 。 It just became too unbelievable and had too much of a twist 。 Still it was fun entertainment。

The Girl on the Train was such a great read。 After reading this book, unfortunately, I like that book less! This book was so heavy-handed and calculated in its plot points that I reflected back on The Girl on the Train and realized it, too, was heavy handed。 The Girl on the Train was an easy page turner with a clear narrative voice。 This book had neither of those benefits; the characters were muddled and rather than thinking whodunnit, I thought whocares。 I'm unlikely to read additional work by The Girl on the Train was such a great read。 After reading this book, unfortunately, I like that book less! Paula Hawkins’s books are always a delight to read。 Her thrillers have always kept me on the edge and I was over the top excited for her new book too。 The story revolves around the murder of a young man and finding his culprit。 The police suspected three women but each of them had their own secrets which they were hiding。 Who killed the man and what was the reason? The book didn’t meet my expectations of a great thriller。 I really didn’t like the characters as they were making me cringe with thei Paula Hawkins’s books are always a delight to read。 Her thrillers have always kept me on the edge and I was over the top excited for her new book too。 The story revolves around the murder of a young man and finding his culprit。 The police suspected three women but each of them had their own secrets which they were hiding。 Who killed the man and what was the reason? The book didn’t meet my expectations of a great thriller。 I really didn’t like the characters as they were making me cringe with their constant bickering。 Not a bad story but definitely not the best from Paula Hawkins。 。。。more

2。8Started out very promising。 but it ended in a very boring tone; as if the author had run out of ideas to twist the plot and it is about time to end it。

I am terribly sorry Paula, you certainly know how to write and this is not personal but I found A Slow Fire Burning to be an absolutely slow, piece of trash that definitely needs to be burned。 There is not one single, redeeming thing about this book except for maybe, Irene。 Maybe。 I was so excited to get Ms。 Hawkins new title and rushed into Barnes and Noble on release day and yet, here we are, almost a month later and I finally slogged through to the end。 I hate not finishing a book so I tried, I am terribly sorry Paula, you certainly know how to write and this is not personal but I found A Slow Fire Burning to be an absolutely slow, piece of trash that definitely needs to be burned。 There is not one single, redeeming thing about this book except for maybe, Irene。 Maybe。 I was so excited to get Ms。 Hawkins new title and rushed into Barnes and Noble on release day and yet, here we are, almost a month later and I finally slogged through to the end。 I hate not finishing a book so I tried, every night but every night, I just fell asleep。 Tonight, I thought to myself, “it’s October, time to read some hauntingly good books so just finish this one already。” I actually had to force myself to finish this book and I have never been more thankful to be done。 I feel like a weight has just been lifted from my shoulders。 Unfortunately, a headache, queasy stomach and a pair of restless legs are left behind。 Lots of triggers: Language, sex, abduction, rape, child death/murder, theft, drug and alcohol abuse, animal murder, physical attack, annoying red herring, incestuous thoughts etc。 🤮 。。。more

I liked this one better than her follow up to The Girl on the Train, but it really was a slow burn。 The big twist wasn't overemphasized or even out of the blue, the characters were WELL developed, and there wasn't a lot of gimmicky pov and setting switches (altho there was a fair amount, it never felt too forced)。 I don't know WHY, exactly, but I enjoyed this。 3。5 stars rounded up cuz, idk, it had spunk, I guess。 Houseboats, creepy family stuff, and the like。 I liked this one better than her follow up to The Girl on the Train, but it really was a slow burn。 The big twist wasn't overemphasized or even out of the blue, the characters were WELL developed, and there wasn't a lot of gimmicky pov and setting switches (altho there was a fair amount, it never felt too forced)。 I don't know WHY, exactly, but I enjoyed this。 3。5 stars rounded up cuz, idk, it had spunk, I guess。 Houseboats, creepy family stuff, and the like。 。。。more

I have struggled to focus while reading ever since the start of the pandemic, but this book blew that out of the water! I was engrossed and intrigued from start to finish and absolutely loved the journey。 This author is so skilled at weaving people, events, and exchanges together just enough to tell a brilliant and cohesive story - while never telling all until the very end。 Such a good read and a great story!

Too many characters at once。 It took a bit in to get used to all of them。 Very anticlimactic ending。

First thoughts: PRO TIP - never look at the last page of a Paula Hawkins book! Haha I think I may have ruined my reading (maybe not ruined but tainted?) of her newest novel by checking how many pages there were! She always has a line to drop at the very end so DON’T PEAK!! Besides that, I always love her writing, her characters have a life of their own, and the plot was interesting albeit a bit all over the place at times, but things seemed to wrap up nicely for the most part in the end。 I alway First thoughts: PRO TIP - never look at the last page of a Paula Hawkins book! The title is very fitting。 This book is about as interesting as watching a slow, agonizing, dull fire burn to ash。 I kept waiting for it to get interesting & hold my attention, but it never did。 As a big fan of Girl on the Train, this one was a big let down。 Definitely don’t recommend。

This novel reminded me a lot of Ruth Rendell’s writing—characters, setting, style。 Very good!
